Murphy Blend – First Loss (1970, Germany)
A powerful and unusual blend of early progressive rock, heavy psych, classical touches and proto-Krautrock, carried by Wolf-Rüdiger Uhlig’s heavily accented English vocals and his chunky, dramatic Hammond organ—somewhere between Atomic Rooster, early Jane and Pell Mell.
The Berlin band—completed by guitarist Wolfgang Rumler, bassist Andreas Scholz and drummer Achim Schmidt—crafted dense melodic passages that erupt into explosive instrumental surges, giving the album a dark, gripping emotional arc.
Their unique mixture of bluesy heaviness and psychedelic German atmosphere made them a rarity in early 70s rock, instantly recognizable and strangely mysterious.
A cult one-off: raw, moody and full of potential—sadly short-lived, as the group split soon after, with Uhlig moving to Hanuman and Scholz joining Blackwater Park.
